MVLC Mail Server

Email

MVLC has drafted an Email Etiquette document for the members of MVLC. In addition, a page describing the basics of the required configuration for mail clients connecting to the MVLC mail server is available.

Webmail

Horde Webmail is the preferred method of browser-based access to MVLC hosted email. It also allows for the creation and sharing of calendars, task lists, notes, and bookmarks.

In addition, Thomas Berezansky has created a basic usage document (pdf) for Horde as it applies to MVLC hosted email and the features MVLC has installed.

DSPAM Control Center

If you wish to use the DSPAM spam filtering software you will need to contact central site, preferably using cop at mvlc.org, to do so. DSPAM filtering on the MVLC mail server is currently an opt-in system, off by default on all accounts.

Those with email hosted at MVLC may wish to check their settings in the DSPAM Control Center. In addition, MVLC has prepared a document on using the spam filter.

Mailing Lists

Please visit lists.mvlc.org for MVLC-hosted mailing lists. To request a mailing list, please contact Central Site with the following information:

Name
The Name of the list, defines the email address (Name@lists.mvlc.org), and must be unique. We also need a library identifier, such as your library code or town name, that will not be confused with another library somewhere in the list name.
Purpose
The purpose of the list, to avoid duplicate or meaningless lists
Administrator/Owner
The email address of the person in charge of the list. If desired there can be multiple, but one should be the primary.
Announce or Discuss
Is the list for Annoucements (like newsletters) or Discussion? Or, put another way, can anyone on the list send to it.
Moderated
Mainly if the list is for Discussion, should postings be moderated by default.
Subject Prefix
The Prefix to slap on the Subject line, normally enclosed in square brackets (aka, [Newsletter])
Anonymous Posting
When posting to the list, as a discussion list or an announce list, should the person who submitted the posting be hidden? More useful when you want your newsletters or announcements to always be from the list, less useful for discussion.
Subscription: Open or closed?
Should people be able to subscribe at will, or need to be approved.
